It is difficult to imagine a good design. One has, at best, an overall idea. But there’s no assurance that it can work. Robert’s creativity and talent for listening make it possible to learn if one’s vague concept can actually result in the right design. And if you don’t think your own idea was really worth pursuing after all, he can be counted on to work out fresh one, something you never imagined. His patience and tolerance, cardinal virtues in the delicate process of designing for people who don’t really know what they want, are qualities for which we remain eternally grateful. So many exchanges, and his generous good-nature prevailed throughout. His elegant box design has made a major contribution to the commercial success we are enjoying with the deck we have just edited. We are confident that Robert’s creation of the cover for the upcoming book will have the same effect. What a pleasure to work with him!
Jean-Claude and Roxanne Flornoy,
Editions ~ Le Tarot
Jean-Claude Flornoy is a master cardmaker in France who has restored a deck of cards from 1650 Paris. Jean-Claude and his wife Rosanne were kind enough to entrust me with designing the package for the deck. The goal was to give a contemporary look while maintaining the historical essense of this 350 year old deck.

With the success of the deck, I was invited once again to work Jean-Claude and Roxanne to design Jean-CLaude's upcoming book, Le Pélerinage des Bateleurs, (The Journey of the Magicians). The challenge was to create an eye-catching cover that communicated the history and the relevence of the subject, while stirring enough curiousity to induce a reader to explore further, and of course, purchase the book.
